Fall 2026 Q Drop, Pass/Fail, and Withdrawal Information
Regular Q Drop, Pass/Fail, and Withdrawal Deadline: November 18th by 11:59 PM (CST)
One-Time Exception (OTE) Q Drop or Full Withdrawal Deadline: December 7th by 11:59 PM (CST)
One-Time Exception (OTE) and Q Drops
If you missed the regular deadline, you may still be eligible to request a late Q drop or full withdrawal through One-Time Exception (OTE) until December 7th.
- Eligibility: You must not have already utilized your OTE earlier in your academic career.
- How to Apply:
- Submit your OTE request online via the OTE Q Drop Request Link.
- For a full withdrawal (dropping all classes), email CNSinfo@austin.utexas.edu.
- Advising: No advisor meeting is required before submitting your request, but you may reach out if you have questions.
Important Notes on Q Drops:
- Q Drop Details:
- A Q drop does not affect your GPA (you will see a "Q" on your transcript instead of a grade).
- Up to 6 Q drops are allowed during your time at UT. The OTE Q drop counts as one of your six.
- Requests are processed immediately and cannot be rescinded. It may appear on your Canvas page and schedule for a couple of days after you submit your request. However, once you submit your request, you can stop going to class.
- Advising Considerations:
- Your advisor may need to review your request if dropping will put you below 12 hours or if it's your graduating semester.
- Lecture/lab combos may require both to be dropped. Contact your academic advisor for more details.
For Pre-Health Professions Students:
- Check the Health Professions Office (HPO) website for FAQs, including advice on whether to Q drop a course. They also offer virtual drop-ins to discuss your decision before submitting your request.
- See the Grade Requirements & Health Professions Considerations section of our website for tips for pre-health professions students, minimum grade requirements, and CNS non-academic resources.
Pass/Fail:
- Eligibility Requirements:
- 30 credit hours completed (excluding current coursework).
- A D- or above earns credit (CR), but F counts in GPA.
- A Pass/Fail course does NOT fulfill specific degree requirements (e.g., Core, Flags, Major, Minor, Certificate).
- Note: If the course is a prerequisite, it must be retaken for a letter grade.
Withdrawal Information
- A withdrawal means dropping all courses for this semester. All students wishing to withdraw must also have a brief appointment with a CNS Non-academic Coordinator to finalize the withdrawal. Schedule your appointment here.
Additional Considerations
- International Students: may verify they are eligible to drop by contacting International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at hotline@austin.utexas.edu
- Financial Aid, Scholarships, Veteran Benefits, NCAA Eligibility, or Visa Status: Contact the appropriate office before submitting any request. Texas One Stop is a great resource for guidance.
Key Reminders:
- Finality of Requests: All Q drop and pass/fail requests are final and cannot be rescinded. Be sure to understand the academic impact before submitting your request.
- Advising Resources: If you have questions, reach out to your academic advisor to ensure you're making an informed decision.
Over Maximum Hours Request for Fall 2026
If you wish to register for more than 17 credit hours in Fall 2026, you must submit an Over Maximum Hours Request.
- Eligibility:
- Must have a 2.5+ GPA.
- Must have completed 14-15 credit hours in a recent semester.
- Approval is at the discretion of your academic advisor.
- Submission Timeline:
- Requests are processed the business day before the semester begins.
- Graduating seniors in their final semester can request approval before or during registration.
- Over Maximum Hours Request Form: Submit Over Maximum Hours Request Here
Time Conflict Override
If you need to add a class with a time conflict:
- Obtain permission from both instructors via email.
- Forward both emails to your academic advisor, including:
- Your EID.
- Course details (course # and unique #).
- Note: Time conflict overrides are processed only for PBH, H E, NTR, HDF, and TXA courses.
For additional resources, including grade requirements, health professions tips, and CNS Non-Academic Coordinator resources, please visit the CNS Policies & Non-Academic Resources page.
Chemistry Lab & Biology Course Registration
Here are some important updates regarding CH 120K registration instructions (for health professions that require one credit hour of lab only) and Biology course reminders.
CH 120K Health Professions Organic Chem Lab Registration
Beginning Fall 2024, the Chemistry Department offers a one credit hour Organic Chemistry lab: CH 120K HLTH PRFSSNS ORGANIC CHEM LAB. This course was created specifically for students who are pursuing a pre-health pathway that requires one credit hour of organic chemistry lab (ex. pre-physician assistant, pre-optometry) instead of two hours.
This course is NOT a substitute for CH 220C. Students who need two credit hours of Organic Chemistry lab will need to take CH 220C to fulfill their pre-health requirements (ex. pre-med, pre-dental).
Registration Procedure:
- Students must email to request registration access for CH 120K by emailing their EID to Chemistry Student Services at:
css@cm.utexas.edu- Subject Line: CH 120K Request - your EID
- Include which health profession path(s) and your EID.
- Students will not be able to register for this course on their own during registration unless you email to request access. Requesting access does not guarantee that you will get into the class.
Important note: Students are responsible for checking pre-health requirements to ensure that they are taking the correct course to fulfill prerequisite requirements.
General Chemistry Lab Reminder
Beginning Fall 2024, the Chemistry Department no longer offers CH 204.
Both CH 301 and CH 302 now have one-credit hour labs that accompany each lecture course (CH 301 + CH 104M; CH 302 + CH 104N). This change was made to allow UT to stay consistent with other universities offering these same courses.
CH 104M and 104N are both one credit hour and still equals two total credit hours. If you have already taken CH 301 and are taking CH 302/have already taken CH 302, you may take both CH 104M & 104N labs at the same time or in separate semesters.
Biology "Reserved" Course Registration
For “reserved” biology courses, you may need to try adding yourself again on the last day of this initial registration cycle, Friday, April 18th at 8:00am.
MBS 226L Microbiology Lab (previously BIO 226L):
- This will be available for all CNS students to register on Friday, April 18th at 8:00am and throughout the upcoming add/drop times in December and January.
If a biology course says it is closed when you try to register, look for an “add to waitlist” option below the red error message. Some classes may not have a waitlist available.
Please also try to register again during the add/drop cycles before the semester begins and during the first few days of school if needed.
Biology Course Abbreviation Changes
To better reflect the diversity of Biology coursework offered at UT Austin, most upper-division Biology courses will be listed under the fields of Integrative Biology (INB) or Molecular Biosciences (MBS) rather than Biology (BIO) beginning with the Fall 2024 course schedule.
The majority of lower-division BIO courses, BIO 325 (Genetics), and BCH 369 Biochemistry will not be affected by this change. Here’s a highlight of the courses that you may be taking as a Public Health Major, BS Nutrition major, and/or as a student on a Pre-Health Track:
- BIO 326R→ MBS 326R (General Microbiology)
- BIO 326M→ MBS 326M (Medical Microbiology)
- BIO 226L→ MBS 226L (Microbiology Lab)
- BIO 365S→ INB 365S (Physiology)
- BIO 165U→ INB 165U (Physiology Lab)
- BIO 446L→ INB 446L (Anatomy)
